The Kakapo, a native to New Zealand, is the heaviest parrot in the world and is also the only parrot that cannot fly despite its large wings. It is however, and excellent climber and either walks or jumps to get from place to place. The Kakapo spends most of their days sleeping and then wondering in the forest alone at night. They mainly keep to themselves and only gather to breed. Even though the Kakapo has the longest lifespan of any parrot (some live to almost 90!) it has been a difficult task keeping their population alive. Feral cats, ferrets and weasels all played a part in the sharp decrease of the Kakapo, and newly hatched chicks were easy targets for rats. The remaining Kakapo population, which is less than 150, lives on two islands off the New Zealand coast where scientists work hard year round to stabilize the falling Kakapo population.
