MONARCH BUTTERFLY Mask
The beautiful black-orange-and-white Monarch butterflies are known for their mass migration that occurs each winter to California and Mexico. They are the only butterflies that make such a large journey. Some even travel up to 3,000 miles! Their colorful patterns warns predators that they are foul tasting and poisonous. The monarchs that are born in late summer and early fall are the only ones that make the migration and the great grandchildren of last year’s migrators will be the only ones to make the trip back from the West Coast. The new generations will follow the same routes as their ancestors did and some even return to the same tree where their family began. There is growing concern that the threat of natural disasters in the Mexican wintering grounds as well as a reduced acreage of milkweed plants will affect the monarch’s survival.
